Вещества биологического происхождения, способные подавлять рост микроорганизмов (бактериостатические, фунгистатические антибиотики) или убивать их (бактерицидные, фунгицидные и другие антибиотики).
Химические превращения природного вещества, обладающего атибиотической активностью, в более стабильное производное. Этот продукт называют обычно полусинтетическим антибиотиком.
К синтезу антибиотиков способны аспергиллы, актиномицеты и некоторые другие микроорганизмы. На первом месте по химическому многообразию синтезируемых веществ стоят стрептомицеты. К настоящему времени подробно охарактеризовано более 2000 антибиотиков.
Основными коммерческими видами антибиотиков являются пенициллины, цефалоспорины, стрептомицины, тетрациклины и эритромицины, получаемые с помощью видов родов Penicillium, Cephalosporium и Streptomyces.
Группа веществ, используемых для лечения различных злокачественных заболеваний; многие из этих веществ являются природными и продуцируются различными видами актиномицетов (например, Streptomyces) (см. также митомицины, блеомицин и дауномицин).
Свойство микроорганизма, позволяющее ему расти в присутствии специфичного антибиотика. Такая устойчивость обычно связана с мутацией или генетическими изменениями, которые могут быть перенесены плазмидой.
Термин используется для определения отношения микроорганизмов к антибактериальным препаратам. Производится для поиска антибиотиков, которые являются наиболее эффективными при лечении данной бактериальной инфекции.

[греч. anti — против и bios (biotikos) — жизнь]органические вещества микробного, животного или растительного происхождения, а также получаемые синтетическим путем, способные подавлять рост микроорганизмов или вызывать их гибель, напр., у грибов — пенициллины (см. пенициллины), у высших растений — фитонциды (см. фитонциды), у животных — дефензины (см. дефензины). А. используются как лекарственные препараты для подавления размножения бактерий, микроскопических грибов и простейших, поражающих человека, животных и растения. Получены также противоопухолевые антибиотики (напр., рубомицин и др.). Поскольку А. подавляют нормальную флору организма, они могут вызывать дисбактериоз, т.е. размножение бактерий или грибов, не свойственных данному организму. При микробиологическом синтезе (см. микробиологический синтез) большинство А. накапливается вне клеток микроорганизмапродуцента. После этого А., употребляемые в медицине, подвергаются высокой степени очистки. Для лечения и профилактики с.-х. животных (напр., от гельминтозов, кокцидиозов и др.) в качестве добавки к кормам обычно выпускают концентрат среды после выращивания в ней продуцента, иногда вместе с биомассой, содержащей значительное количество других продуктов обмена веществ продуцента, в т.ч. витамины, аминокислоты, нуклеотиды и др. А. используют и как средство борьбы с различными фитопатогенами; воздействие сводится к замедлению роста и гибели фитопатогенных микроорганизмов, содержащихся в семенах и вегетативных органах растений (фитобактериомицин, трихотецин, полимицин). В пищевой промышленности А. применяются как консерванты пищевых продуктов, они воздействуют на клостридиальные и термофильные бактерии, устойчивые к нагреванию; один из наиболее эффективных консервантов — антибиотик низин (см. низин), который практически не токсичен для человека и позволяет вдвое снизить время термообработки продуктов.
